Eskenazi Health Celebrates Groundbreaking for New East Side Health Center

This June, Eskenazi Health and Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County announced a more than $50 million investment in capital improvements to primary care facilities across Marion County, including construction of a new state-of-the-art health center opening in 2024 on the east side of Indianapolis.

Eskenazi Health collaborated with members of the immediate neighborhoods and community organizations throughout the planning and design of the building. Steered by community input, the facility will serve as a hub for community gathering, providing accessible care options and social amenities under one roof.

“Eskenazi Health Center East 38th Street will see the integration of Marion County Public Health Department services within its walls allowing for expanded reach and improved access for the residents of Marion County,” said Virginia Caine, M.D., Director and Chief Medical Officer of the Marion County Public Health Department. “Identifying the challenges and assessing the risks and protective factors confronting our community and this neighborhood have been central to the development of the new health center.”

Eskenazi’s new health center on East 38th street will complement the community through:

  • More accessible primary care and access to Marion County Public Health Department services
  • Offering an array of services including Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Care, lifestyle wellness, social services, financial counseling, pharmacy, and access to other community services
  • Creating community amenities with a café, multipurpose space, teaching kitchen, technology hub, conference room and community organization workspace
  • Connecting with IndyGo's Purple Line for health care access from public transportation, and expanding community and healthy resources through walking trails and community plazas where farmers' markets, local events, and recreational activities can occur

Eskenazi Health Center East 38th Street is the second primary care center built under the Eskenazi Health name since the opening of Eskenazi Health Center West 38th Street in October 2013.

‘Meeting Patients Where They Are’
The building is highly accessible, located on East 38th Street and along the IndyGo Purple Line. A former paved space will be transformed into green space, making it a premier destination for local community events and recreational activities.

“These improvements in primary care are part of Eskenazi Health’s mission to meet patients where they are,” said Paul Babcock, President and Chief Executive Officer of Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. “Our investment in the community goes beyond this new health center to include support for existing facilities across Marion County.”

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said the Eskenazi Health investment will have a great impact on neighborhoods throughout Indianapolis.

“This investment further proves Eskenazi Health’s continued dedication to Indianapolis and to serving our entire community, including our most vulnerable neighbors,” said Hogsett. “Our city thanks you for your tireless efforts in improving the health and wellness of all.”

The design provides multiple front doors that lead into an interior public concourse where natural colors, rich textures and multicultural art provide a welcoming environment to all. The building opens its arms, allowing the concourse to connect with a large community plaza, the East 38th Street intersection and a bus stop to the west. The concourse serves as a funnel directing visitors to the community amenity spaces within, which are accessible via the outdoor community court.

“As they have for more than a century and a half, Eskenazi Health professionals continue to keep ‘care’ as the focus of every health care interaction,” said Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb. “With this state-of-the art expansion, I couldn’t be more thrilled that more Hoosiers will have access to the accessible physical and mental health care services they provide.”

Building and landscape are tied together with a ribbon-like façade, which engages the site, wraps around, and rises to create porches along the perimeter. The porches allow visitors to pause, congregate, and enjoy the active outdoor spaces. In addition to creating exterior movement along the façade, the ribbon celebrates a symbolic gesture the coming together of Eskenazi Health, the Marion County Public Health Department, and the community.

The project is seeking LEED certification through the selection of sustainable materials and introducing a vast number of green spaces. Efficient building systems and an abundance of natural light will help bring daylight inside the facility while creating a welcoming and healing environment.

Features of the new Eskenazi Health Center East 38th Street include:

  • 72 exam rooms for primary care services for adults, children and teens, mental health, and OB/GYN
  • 30 consultation rooms for Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Care services, dietitians, social workers, Eskenazi Health Medical - Legal Partnership, and research
  • A large community center that includes multipurpose space, a teaching kitchen where the community can come to learn about healthy lifestyles and cooking, a café, and offices for community collaborators
  • Physical therapy / rehabilitation services
  • Dental suite with eight exam chairs and X-ray capability
  • Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program with six consultation rooms and a B.A.B.E. store to provide a place to get early life resources
